Maths
At Pimlico Primary, we are dedicated to helping children become confident and fluent problem-solvers in mathematics. Our goal is for every child to feel secure in working with numbers and to reason logically.
To achieve this, we focus on developing a strong number sense in all our pupils. We begin by using concrete resources, which allow children to gain clear understanding of numbers. From there, we gradually move to pictorial representations and, finally, to abstract concepts. Throughout this process, we provide ample opportunities for practice, ensuring that pupils build the automaticity needed to tackle increasingly complex mathematical problems with accuracy.
We follow the White Rose Maths curriculum, which breaks down each topic into small, manageable steps. This way, children are taught to master concepts at their own pace and teachers can regularly monitor their progress, with these small steps in mind. We also focus on building mathematical vocabulary, so that children can express their ideas clearly and precisely.
We’re proud of the progress our pupils make by the time they leave Pimlico Primary. Our Year 6 pupils consistently achieve excellent results in SATS and national competitions like the Junior Mathematical Challenge. More importantly, secondary school teachers often tell us how well-prepared our pupils are for the challenges ahead, and that’s what truly matters to us.
