History
At Pimlico Primary, we understand the importance of a strong history education that helps children connect with Britain’s past and the wider world. Our curriculum is designed to give students a deep understanding of how people’s lives have changed over time and how historical events have shaped the world we live in today.
We build on the National Curriculum by using carefully crafted textbooks written by teachers in our Trust’s Curriculum Centre, which guide students through ancient and British history. These books are organized in chronological order, providing a clear and engaging narrative that makes history come alive for our students.
Our ancient history program starts with the earliest human societies, where students learn about the transition from hunter-gatherer lifestyles to the first settled communities. They dive into the fascinating stories of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, exploring the invention of writing, the development of laws, and the creation of art and literature. The journey continues with the study of Ancient Greece and Rome, where students discover the incredible legacies these civilizations have left us, from democracy and philosophy to scientific advancements.
In our British history program, students explore the key people and events that have shaped the history of the British Isles. They begin with the Christian conversion of England and learn about important figures like Alfred the Great, who played a crucial role in uniting the country. The curriculum covers significant milestones such as the Norman Conquest, the feudal system, and the emergence of Parliament.
Throughout the curriculum, we emphasize important concepts like government, law, and civilization. We ensure that students understand these ideas in the context of specific historical periods, helping them build a solid foundation of knowledge. Our history lessons are designed to be engaging and thought-provoking, encouraging students to explore complex questions, such as the importance of national unity or the role of language and beliefs in shaping a society.
Our goal is to inspire a love of history in our students while giving them the tools they need to think critically about the past and its impact on the present. By focusing on chronological storytelling and key historical themes, we help students gain a deep and lasting understanding of the world around them.
