Reading is at the heart of our school. We’re committed to helping every child become a confident reader, and we work closely with parents to make this happen. We know that reading fluently and understanding what they read is essential for your child's success in school and beyond.
We start teaching reading and writing from day one with the Read Write Inc phonics program. This program helps children learn the sounds that letters make and how to blend them into words, setting a strong foundation for reading and writing. Our staff receive extensive training on how to follow this program effectively, and we make sure to give extra support to any child who needs it. We also value the role parents play in supporting their child’s reading at home.
Reading isn’t just about sounding out words—it’s about understanding and enjoying them. That’s why we introduce a wide range of vocabulary and read high-quality stories from around the world with our pupils. This not only improves their reading skills but also sparks a love for stories and ideas that will stay with them for life.
When it comes to writing, we use a programme called ‘The Write Stuff,’ which teaches children to write with clarity, creativity, and confidence. We also make grammar fun and practical, showing children how to use it in their own writing.
While reading and writing are central, we believe that understanding the world is key to being a good reader and writer. That’s why we offer a rich curriculum full of subjects, activities, and trips that help children become curious, thoughtful readers and writers.
Most importantly, we want reading and writing to be joyful experiences. Daily story time, library visits, and special events like ‘buddy reading’ are all ways we inspire a lifelong love of language in our pupils.
